Natural Cures For Depression That Actually Work

31.01.2009 | Author:zoe

When I talk about natural cures for depression, I’m referring to lasting changes in the way you live day-to-day…not herbal supplements and the like.

This is not to say that prescription medications for depression (”Prozac,” for instance) should not be taken for short-term help.

Prescription Depression Medication Is Only A Partial Solution

Usually this will fix only a part of your problem.  It’s your lifelong commitment to your new way of living that will be your “cure.” Depression is a signal that your life is out of balance; it’s a wake-up call. Therefore curing your depression means taking the necessary steps to get your life back into balance.

These things include daily (or almost daily) cardiovascular exercise, eating healthy, quitting smoking, no excessive drinking, and NO illegal drugs whatsover.  Most of the time doing (or stopping) just these things alone will “cure” depression in most people.  “Extra credit” would be things like counseling or other cognitive therapies.

But when some people think about natural cures for depression, they think of herbal remedies such as St. John’s Wort.  The hope is it’s going to be another ‘cure-in-a-pill.’  But this isn’t surprising.  Because we live in an age of ‘instant gratification.’  We’ve become conditioned to expect a quick and easy solution for nearly everything:

Instant Gratification

Need your oil changed?  Pull into Jiffy Lube.  Need cash at 10 pm?  The ATM.  No time to cook?  The drive-thru at McDonald’s…or complete meals from your freezer to microwave ready in minutes.  Need information on the DNA of Mammoth tusks for a paper due tomorrow?  A few keystrokes on the computer…need the paper written for you?  Have your credit card ready.

…The same mindset applies to our medical needs:  Are you tired?  Drink a Rock Star or Red Bull or similar energy drink for a fast burst of energy…even the remotest service station carries them.  Feeling stressed out?  Take a Valium…You can get a steady supply if you really want to.  Want to avoid pregnancy?  You guessed it, a pill.  Got RLS–”Restless Leg Syndrome?”  Sure you do, and the pharmaceutical goliaths are more than happy to help prove you do–so they can “help” you get rid of it.

So we expect the pharmaceutical companies to have a cure for depression for us, too.  And, of course, they do have different drugs for us.  Oh, but if it were only that easy, though.

Unfortunately, Exercise And Eating Right Can’t Be Taken In A Pill

But while you may have to take a pill in order to get your brain’s chemicals ‘evened out,’ it’s only part of the cure–and by far the easiest part.  The hard part–which has been proven more effective (overall) than drugs in curing depression–is daily cardiovascular exercise and eating right, amongst other “free” things.  (I know you may be thinking that buying & preparing healthy food can be expensive–which can be true.)  But this is also the part that gets little or no press…the “grunt work.”  This is the part of curing depression that no one want to talk about or admit.

Because there’s no money in the cure for depression–only the treatment–for pharmaceutical companies, they have very little support and promotion of things like eating right and exercise.

The Cure Is Up To You

So it ends up being up to the depression sufferer to pull him or herself ‘up by the bootstraps’ and do these things (and stop doing things like drinking, drugs, smoking, and any other self-destructive behaviors).  And these life-changing things must be continued daily for life–along with, if necessary, anti-depression medications.

Accomplishing some of these natural cures for depression is easier said than done.  Because if it were easy, not many folks would be depressed and need prescription meds in the first place. Somehow, however, you are going to have to take action on an improvement plan for yourself.

Natural Cures For Depression Don’t Come Easy, But Are Worth It!

Having a plan of action to improve yourself is a great start.  But remember that there is no change without ACTION; knowing what to do is great, but you must take measurable action to get and stay well for the rest of your life. These natural cures for depression take some effort, but they’re the only way for a fulfilling and happy life.  Yes, you can do it.

anxiety disorder

Anxiety depression is a mental illness unlike any other. An anxiety disorder can cause a person to have continuous days in their lives that are filled with overwhelming fear and anxiety. If this illness is left untreated for very long, a person will get progressively worse. Millions of people are affected by this devastating disease. Several types of anxiety depression exist, and each one has different treatments and symptoms to watch for.

One form of anxiety depression that affects roughly 2.4 million adults every day is the panic disorder. A panic disorder is when an individual experiences feelings of terror that attack suddenly and repeatedly with no warning. A person can experience physical sensations such as an increased heart rate and the body may break out into a sweat. A panic disorder is one of the most treatable forms of anxiety that a person can have. With the right medications and planned psychotherapy, an individual can lead a normal life without the fear of having a panic attack.

Obsessive compulsive disorder is a form of anxiety depression that can be very simple or can go to extremes. With OCD as many people call it, a person has continuous obsessions that can be disturbing thoughts or behaviors. In order to cope with these obsessions, an individual must do certain rituals called compulsions. Pleasure is not derived from doing these rituals. However, people receive relief to the anxiety that will turn into a monster if the rituals are not done. This is one of the anxiety depression categories that can be treated with medication if it is beginning to take over a person’s life, but so many people fail to realize that they have a mental illness with OCD.

No matter what type of anxiety depression a person is experiencing, treatment is available. With both the panic disorder and the obsessive compulsive disorder, carefully planned psychotherapy and medication can ease the worries that plague the person experiencing these life altering disorders. Anxiety and depression together are a hard matter to deal will. Fears and rituals can ruin a person’s life. Anxiety depression is, however, a treatable condition if a person will just accept what is happening and not shrug it off. Human suffering due to any form of depression is really unnecessary. Help is available for those who desire to make their lives more manageable. If a person who is sick will not get help, then the family or friends need to take over.

What is clinical depression?

27.01.2009 | Author:zoe

Depression, a mental illness that is often characterized by prolonged periods of sadness and melancholy, experts from the field of psychiatry say.

But just because one person is moping around and just generally hating the world around him or her, doesn’t mean that it’s already depression, but if this kind of behavior, the feeling of emptiness, loss of self-worth and absolutely no hope for happiness just goes on and on, then, yes, that individual is very much, indeed, depressed.

Still, there are various types of depression, from Manic or Bipolar depression - characterized by sudden and extreme changes in one’s mood wherein one minute he or she is in an elevated state of euphoria while the next minute (day or week) he or she is feeling to be in a personal hell, Postpartum depression - characterized by a prolonged sadness and a feeling of emptiness by a new mother wherein physical stress during child birth, an uncertain sense of responsibility towards the new born baby can be just some of the possible factors why some new mother go through this, Dysthimia - characterized by a slight similarity with depression, although this time, it’s been proven to be a lot less severe, but of course with any case, should be treated immediately, Cyclothemia - characterized by a slight similarity with Manic or Bipolar depression wherein the individual suffering from this mental illness may occasionally suffer from severe changes in one’s moods, Seasonal Affective Disorder - characterized by falling in a rut only during specific seasons (i.e. Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall) studies however, prove that more people actually fall in to depression during Winter and Fall seasons, wherein a person’s mood may change from happy to angry or sad in very short time.

Clinical depression however, or as some might call as ‘major’ depression, is actually the medical term for depression. Actually clinical depression is more of a disorder rather than an illness since it basically covers only those who are suffering from symptoms related to depression. Clinical depression is how doctors usually refer to “depression” when giving a diagnose of their patient. It’s basically just a medical term.

However, clinical depression is possible to be cured. Doctors are very confident that their patients who are actually suffering from Clinical depression will be treated and become good mental health if they treated as soon as they have been diagnosed with Clinical depression. Patients who have been seeking for treatments for Clinical depression have proven to be quite successful in their quest, given that 80 percent of actual Clinical depression patients have been treated and has somewhat found relief from their disorder.

The health center is the best place for those who are seeking some answers for their Clinical depression questions, and they can also find some useful information from books or internet . Clinical depression may not pose as much as a threat as the other types of depression, but it is best to leave it to the hands of professionals who can safely attend to and cure this disorder.

The Various Bipolar Disease Types

25.01.2009 | Author:zoe

There are many names which can be given to bipolar disorder and some of these include bipolar affective disorder, manic-depressive illness, manic depression, bipolar mod disorder and manic-depressive disorder. The general symptoms that people with bipolar disorder often experience include unusual shifts in mood, energy, behavior and normal functioning ability. The mood swings can be from high periods of mania to low episodes of depression. The severity of the disorder will determine the frequency of the mood swings. There are different categories that bipolar diseases can be placed under and this will depend on the type of symptoms that are being shown by the person affected. These categories or types include bipolar 1 disorder, bipolar disorder 2, cyclothymic disorder and bipolar disorder not otherwise specified.

Bipolar 1 Disorder

People who suffer from this type of disorder often experience both bipolar mania and depression. Bipolar 1 disorder is more commonly known as bipolar disorder 1. Bipolar 1 disorder differs from bipolar disorder 2 in terms of the duration and severity of the symptoms. The duration of the symptoms in bipolar 1 disorder can last anywhere from weeks to a couple of months.

Type 2: Bipolar Disorder 2

People who suffer from bipolar disorder 2 often experience severe depression along with periods of mild mania known as hypomania. There are no delusions experienced with this type of disorder but mental functionality is still impaired.

Type 3: Cyclothymic Disorder

Alternate attacks of hypomania and mild depression can be experienced by people with this type of disorder. The symptoms of this type of disorder are not as severe as the previously mentioned types of disorders but are longer in duration with no break in the occurrence of symptoms.

Type 4: Bipolar Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (NOS)

This type includes those bipolar symptoms and features that don’t meet any of the categories of bipolar disorder, such as very rapid alternation between depressive symptoms and manic symptoms, recurrent episodes of hypo manic phase without depression, and hypo manic episodes that are associated with chronic depression.

Bipolar disorder 1 is the most severe of all the types of bipolar disorders. It will possibly have a high frequency of recurrence if left untreated. This type has an estimated 15% death risk by suicide rate. It also considered as third on the list of leading causes of death among people aged fifteen to twenty-four years old.

The symptoms of Bipolar Disorder 1

Both manic and depression phases is experienced with bipolar 1 disorder and the usual symptoms like unusual happiness and sadness ,grandiose delusions, pressured speech, change in eating and sleeping patterns and suicidal attempts can also be expected.

How to Teat Bipolar 1 Disorder

Some of the more commonly used medications in the treatment of bipolar 1 include mood stabilizers, antidepressants and antipsychotics. Anxiety, insomnia and restlessness can also be managed by other prescribed medications. In some cases, psychotherapy is also a choice of treatment.

Having a bipolar disorder, especially bipolar 1 disorder is something that should not be taken for granted since it can really lead to death due to suicide if left untreated. Prompt treatment should be sought once the symptoms occur.

Dealing with Depression

Nearly 15 million Americans each year are affected by a serious illness called depression.  Make no mistake, it is a real disease.  Although it is defined as a mental illness this is no reflection on the personal attributes of the inflicted.  Depression can strike every person.  It’s path has no pattern.  It can strike the rich or the poor.  Race or religion aren’t important.  The fact that you are suffering from this disease does not mean that you are less a human being.  The age-old stereotype that has been associated with a mental illness must be ignored.  The suffering associated with this disease will only get worse without treatment.  Ignoring the signs will not make it disappear.  This medical condition will progress until it takes over your whole life unless treated.

Many things contribute to depression.  Feeling sad or anxious for a day or two is not the extent of this disease.  The affects of true depression can last for months and years.  Depression at its worse can lead one to the act of suicide.  In its early stages it may just make you feel remorse.  The pleasure from favorite activities might disappear.  You can experience loneliness and despair.  It could lead to feelings of failure and a sense of the future only getting worse.  Your entire personality can change as time passes.  It impacts every phase of life from work and school to at home.  Expect insomnia and increased anxiety.

Depression has many causes.  A major contributer is stress.  Stress caused by the loss of a loved one or from a serious illness that you have been diagnosed with.  It can be passed on genetically. It can result from physical, sexual or even mental abuse.  Much of the time it can be felt because of simply trying to get by financially in everyday life.  Competition to make it in society creates stress in the modern world.  This disease can become very dangerous.  The good news is that there is help if you choose to seek it.  Only about 4.5 million of the 15 million Americans who suffer from depression each year will admit the problem and seek help.  A loved one or you have to look for the help.

Medications like Prozac and ?ouch therapy?are often combined to treat depression.  But medications often have side effects, including causing more depression, as well as they can be expensive as can a psychiatrist or psychologist.  There are natural medications available that contain the ingredient ‘hyperforin’ that are just as effective as the prescribed anti-depressants.  There are support groups that are aimed at assisting those affected by this terrible illness.  The bottom line is this there is help for depression but you have to want it or someone has to want it for you.

The tell-tale symptoms of depression People who may be suffering from depression or manic disorders actually exhibit or show each and every kind of symptom of depression that doctors will tell you that depressed people have. Sometimes it’s actually quite easy to overlook such symptoms and not be able to help one’s self or others who are suffering from depression for that matter.

There are actually a lot of symptoms of depression that depressed people may actually posses but they don’t have to suffer from each and every one of them before you actually help them get diagnosed and be treated for this illness. Also, since symptoms of depression actually vary, the time of their “attacks” varies as well.

Here are some common examples of symptoms of depression:

Prolonged period of sadness or not feeling “up to it,” people who are always feeling not in the mood, who’d rather mope around the house and feel sorry for one’s self is the best example for this symptom of depression.

Feels hopeless, perennial pessimist: speaking of feeling sorry for one’s self, another common symptom of depression is when a person actually feels like he/she has nothing to look forward to in his or her life. As for being the perennial pessimist, those who show this symptom of depression are usually very negative about things, again, the feeling of hopelessness comes in to mind.

Guilt-driven, loss of self-worth and helplessness: other symptoms of depression that can be easily seen on people who prefer to mope around all day long are these. Whenever a person feels so guilty over something, that actually makes one a very sad person who feels like he or she doesn’t deserve to be happy. Thus, the loss of self-worth, if that person feels like he or she isn’t worthy of being happy or enjoying one’s self then that’s clear tell-tale symptom of depression. Helplessness also contribute to being depressed, when assuming that things won’t simply go your way, it’s already a clear saying that you have absolutely no hope in your body at all.

Isn’t interested in finding or taking pleasure; just dropping the hobbies as well as the other things that one used to enjoy: this tell-tale symptom of depression just shows how depressed a person can be, if one is actually too sad to take pleasure even in the very things that one loves then that person is seriously lacking something, rather, that person might well have caught the depression bug.

Fatigue, always tired: people suffering from depression, since they’ve lost whatever interest in life that they may have had before are actually lacking of physical energy at all times, if one would prefer to just mope around, probably won’t even eat not get enough sleep, a depressed person may well be on their way to not just a mental illness but depression can actually be terrible for one’s physical health as well.

Having trouble concentrating, having bad memory and is indecisive: a person who is suffering from depression easily gives away this tell-tale symptom of depression. Wherein one’s lack of interest with regards to the outside world or for just about anything for that matter can lead to that person’s inability to lose track of things and actually not be able to remember things that happened or what other people said. Lack of interest actually makes depressed people very inattentive.

There are actually more symptoms of depression that can actually help you see if a person (or you) needs to be brought to the doctor to get some help when it comes to depression: lacking sleep, sleeping too much or waking up at wee hours of the morning are all symptoms of depression (if it happens on a daily basis), appetite loss as well as eating too much may show one’s lack of enthusiasm for life. Be weary of sudden weight loss or weight gain in those around you. Being suicidal, talking about death, about wanting to die is another clear indication that that person is depressed. Being restless and irritable and physical symptoms that are usually brought about by poor mental health such as headaches, digestive disorders and various body pains.

People suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder actually shows a lot of symptoms, from lack of sleep, to being unable to relax, getting tired easily, cannot concentrate on what they’re doing and even suffering from depression. Causes for Depression in Men

13.01.2009 | Author:zoe

For decades it was thought that women were the more emotional of the two genders and that depression was a woman’s disease. Clinical depression is thought to be a sign of emotional weakness and “real men” aren’t allowed such a “weakness”. In reality, there are more and more diagnoses of depression in men being reported today, and none of these cases have anything to do with weakness of any sort.

More men suffer from clinical depression because it is a physical condition. Only now doctors have noticed that depression is an emotion where as clinical depression is a physical condition, which is why men are often fallen into the trap.

More of the men are suffering from this disease and so they the one’s who are also taking treatment against it.

Also, doctors are finding they have more treatment options for depression in men, which may too encourage many to seek that treatment, realizing that help is available if they simply ask for it.

Its not because you feel weak or sad that you end up being clinically depressed. It is because your brain doesn’t produce important chemicals for which you end up with clinical depression. The outside factors play an important role to carry a certain mood.

Those outside influences simply trigger the chemical reaction that is out of whack when it comes to depression in men.  Thinking that you can control it by willpower or the strength of your mind is like saying you can make cancer go away by concentrating really hard.  Depression in men is caused by internal factors that need to be addressed and treated just as much as the emotional state that a patient will be in when they suffer from depression.

You need to take proper medication after consulting a doctor. The conditions affect a person very badly.

Depression in men usually is very strong and so you end up neglecting your own career, wife, children, and friends and so on. To help you treat these conditions effectively there are treatments which are available. You only need to consult a doctor and he will tell you what you need to do next.
